It's not terrible… in fact, some designers like having it that tight.

Background. In many fonts, there is not enough space around em dashes and en dashes for my tastes. (moreover, in printing, the em dash was signifcantly longer than i see on my screen in the above sentence.)

It is not unusual, though, to see instead a dash with spaces. The em dash is typically used without spaces on either side, and that is the style used in this guide. But most of the documents i have ever seen do have spaces around em dashes.
Full word spaces around an em dash are likely to create too much of a hole in your text block (too much open space in the overall texture) and this will likely look unsightly.
Use one before the parenthetical information and one after it. Em dashes draw attention to the information they enclose or set apart. But leave the em dash closed. Don't add spaces around an em dash.
